Maestría
tour, 2007
Featuring special guest artist Miguel Funi
Led by the celebrated singer-dancer Miguel Peña Vargas "El
Funi," the Seville-based flamenco company Arte y Pureza (Art and
Purity) returns to the USA with its production "Maestría".
Hailed by critics as "fierce and triumphant," the company’s
mission is to preserve traditional, pure flamenco from the gypsy neighborhoods
of Andalucía, Spain. Arte y Pureza’s raw emotion and artistry
exhilarate the soul and bring audiences to their feet.
The
much acclaimed seven-member company is led by Miguel Peña Vargas
"El Funi," a true legend of flamenco. With his gallant gait,
trademark white scarf and impeccable blue suit, he reminds audiences of
a gypsy version of the late Cuban bolero singer Ibrahim Ferrer (Buena
Vista Social Club). Elegance, exceptional rhythmic dominance and sheer
artistic genius characterize El Funi as he invites his audience to accompany
him on an unforgettable journey through Andalucía, Spain.
The
performance is an amazing display of improvisation and mastery within
the oldest styles of gypsy song and dance. It includes world-renowned
singers, dancers and guitarists such as Spain’s 2006 Guitarist of
the Year Antonio Moya, Cihtli Ocampo (dancer in Tony Gatlif's film "Exils"),
Javier Heredia, Gabriel "Pies Plomo" (son of the legendary José
de la Tomasa), Fabiola Perez and director Ethan Margolis.
A
sold-out 2006 USA tour prompted a return engagement tour this year. The
show will travel to Santa Cruz, Berkeley, San Francisco, Portland, Los
Angeles, San Diego, Ann Arbor, Pittsburgh and New York
U.S.A
tour 2006
Featuring master guistarist Antonio Moya
The performance Arte y Pureza is a rare look into the purest forms of
flamenco music and dance. The show brings powerful gypsy singing from
the legendary town of Utrera with the emotional voice of Maria Peña.
Expect dazzling footwork and unique style from La Gallardí , the
show's leading dancer. Described by flamencologist Mario Bois as “truly
exceptional and astounding”, La Gallardí captivates her audiences
worldwide. In perhaps one of the most surprising moments of the performance,
Luis Peña and Javier Heredia, two gypsies from Seville, will share
their art of "baile casero", one of the oldest forms of gypsy
song and dance. The dissonant, melancholy notes of Antonio Moya´s
guitar joined by his disciple Ethan Margolis set the musical background
for an unforgettable evening. Arte y Pureza is a display of artistry and
personality rarely seen outside the intimate bars and private parties
of Andalucía. Each individual artist is currently considered a
major force in his or her field. It is a rare opportunity to see this
much experience, energy and raw talent together on one stage.
